Backcountry Awareness
Exploring terrain outside resort boundaries is an incredible experience, but it comes with a different level of responsibility.
Unlike within ski resorts, backcountry and off-piste areas in Japan are not controlled or patrolled. Conditions can change quickly, and natural hazards such as deep snow, tree wells, and avalanches are part of the mountain environment.
Rescue in these areas can take time, and in some situations may involve coordination with local rescue teams or helicopter support. Costs related to rescue and medical assistance can be significant, so having appropriate travel and winter sports insurance like one from Austrian Alpine Club is strongly recommended.
Our goal is always to choose terrain carefully, manage risk, and create a safe and enjoyable experience — but it’s important to understand that the mountains remain an unpredictable environment.
